Dutch designer Marjolein van der Wal wins WOW Award in New Zealand
Since 1987, the Brancott Estate World of WearableArt (WOW) is an annual international event in Wellington. The event materialized from the desire to create a modern cross-over between art and fashion.
The costume Hide in my Boneshadow from Marjolein van der Wal was chosen by the jury as the price-winning design in the category Gen–I Creative Excellence: Under the microscope. Furthermore, the same costume was runner-up in the prestigious Ultimate Brancott Estate WOW Supreme Award – category: the overall price of seven categories.
Hide in my Boneshadow is constructed as a bony figure, inspired by the exoskeleton-structure of insects. It was created from the desire of protection, like a barrier that extinguishes incitements from outside. An armor that shows sheer power, but consists of soft materials. “Marjolein’s contribution is a strong sculptural piece and has a strong stage presence, strong color palate and shows an amazing use of material”, says Suzie Moncrieff, founder and jury member of the WOW.
Marjolein resides in Amsterdam and works under the name Mar-vellous, whereby she seeks the demarcation between fashion and art. She is also the initiator of the artist-collective Les Avant Nu, famous for its expressive, dynamic shows.
